Pal Frenak Performs in Brussels, Paris

The Hungarian Cultural Institute in Brussels' Seul sur scene series aims to introduce the best of Hungarian dance and dancers to Brussels audiences and local professionals. In addition to the Frenák performance, it will include two shows by the Double Mirror Company, one of which, Sir John, will be for children; a solo piece by Andrea Bárdos entitled A Woman; and two other performances still in preparation.

Frenák founded his Compagnie Pál Frenák in Paris in 1989. He expanded the company a decade later by recruiting several young Hungarian dancers. The new members, carefully selected by Frenák, inspired each other, and during workshops they moved beyond classical and modern dance methods, developing their own unique style and dance language. Important elements of the company's style are its combination of mimic, sign language and body movements, as well as the inclusion of other performing arts in their shows, including circus, theatre, fashion shows and contemporary music.

The Gyula Harangozó award-winning Frenák will bring his troupe to France for a performance at the Hungarian Institute in Paris, as part of its Café de la dans series, on February 7.

Hungarian Days

Bozar and the Hungarian Culture Brussels (HCB) will co-organise the Hungarian Days between 9-13 November 2007. The series of programmes pay tribute to the memory of Bela Bartok, Jeno Hubay and Zoltan Kodaly. The three most important classical music venues in Brussels, the Royal Conservatory, Bozar and the Museum of Instruments will host the events. The three identifiable event groups are that of the Bartok weekend, Hubay day, which will be preceded by the Danube Rouge book launch, and last but not least, the Andras Schiff-Eszter Perenyi-Miklos Perenyi master courses at the Conservatory. The Hubay Society will have an afternoon concert as well at the Museum of Instruments and the Accord Quartet will play at Bozar on Sunday morning.

Besides Bartok and Kodaly, Hubay is well-known amongst the music-aficionados of Brussels. Hubay was the first director of the violin department of the Brussels Conservatory between 1882 and 1886 thanks to his contact with violin virtuoso Henri Vieuxtemps. The department nowadays is led by another Hungarian, Katalin Sebestyén. Hubay returned to Hungary in 1886, where he accepted the director position of the violin department of the Hungarian Music Academy, which under his direction soon became a top European music institution. He was the director from the Academy 1919 and in 2007 we remember the 70th anniversary of his death.
